Winter in Greece doesn’t mean the sea is off-limits. In fact, some places invite you in with mild weather, calm waters and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Here are five spots where you can swim when most others are bundling up.

Lake Vouliagmeni (near Athens)

Just outside Athens on the Riviera, this unique brackish lake stays surprisingly warm thanks to natural underground currents. The temperature rarely falls below 18 °C and often ranges between 21-24 °C in winter.

You’ll find swimmers in tow all year round, making this a top choice if you want to dip in without going full cold-water warrior.

Stolidi Beach (Alimos, Athens)

Within easy reach of Athens centre, this partially enclosed beach is loved by locals for off-season swims. The water temperatures in January may hover around 20-22 °C and the spot offers free showers and changing rooms too.

If you like easy access, city vibes and a casual winter swim, this works beautifully.

Loutra Pozar (Northern Greece)

For something more unusual, head inland to Loutra Pozar: natural thermal baths in a forested setting, where the water stays around 37 °C even during winter.

Here you’re swimming amid nature, near waterfalls and steam-rising pools — less beach, more rejuvenation.

Rethymno (Crete)

On the big island of Crete, Rethymno offers beaches where winter swimmers still take the plunge. The local winter swimmers’ club meets annually, and the waters are mild enough to make it comfortable even outside peak season.

It’s ideal if you’re already visiting Crete in winter and want to combine sightseeing with a crisp swim.

Kalamaria District, Thessaloniki

Even in the northern city of Thessaloniki there are winter swimmers. In the seaside district of Kalamaria, locals regularly dive into the Thermaic Gulf, proving that you don’t have to be on a remote island to swim in winter.

Great for a city-based winter swim experience that’s a little off the usual.

Tips Before You Dive

  • Choose sheltered bays or lakes if you’re not used to cold water: they’ll feel more forgiving.
  • Check local water and air conditions: wind, rain and current will affect comfort.
  • Bring warm clothes for before and after: your body cools fast once you exit the water.
  • Consider a short dip first if you’re new to winter swimming: you’ll still benefit even with a shorter stay in the water.
  • Always follow local safety guidance: slip-free surface, depth, available lifeguards or changing rooms.

Winter doesn’t mean you must stay dry — in Greece you can dip, refresh and swim long after the summer crowds have gone.
